How to make a lantern

Here are instructions on how to make a paper lantern using willow withies, masking tape, tissue paper, PVA glue, a candle, and wire.

  1. Gather your materials: willow withies, masking tape, tissue paper, PVA glue, a candle, and wire.
  2. Start by creating the frame of your lantern. Take a few willow withies and form a shape, securing the ends together with masking tape. Add more withies around the shape to create a sturdy frame.
  3. Once you have the frame, attach vertical willow withies evenly spaced around the frame, securing them with masking tape at the top and bottom. These will serve as the ribs of your lantern.
  4. Take tissue paper and cut it into rectangular strips.
  5. Dip the tissue paper strips into the glue mixture, ensuring they are fully coated. Start layering the strips onto the willow frame, overlapping them slightly and smoothing them down as you go. Cover the entire frame with the tissue paper, leaving an opening at the top.
  6. Allow the lantern to dry completely. This may take a few hours or overnight, depending on the thickness of the tissue paper layers.
  7. To create a handle, take a piece of wire and bend it into a U-shape. Attach the ends of the wire to opposite sides of the lantern, securing them in place with masking tape.
  8. Finally, place a small candle in the center of the lantern, ensuring it is stable and won't pose a fire hazard. Light the candle and enjoy the warm glow emanating through the tissue paper.

Remember to exercise caution when using a lit candle and never leave it unattended. Enjoy your handmade paper lantern!
